Villa del Balbianello, historical background
Villa del Balbianello, which dates to the 18th Century, was built on the remains of a 13th Century monastery with the original facade and bell tower remaining today. Build in 1787 for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. At the end of the 18th Century the villa was bought by Giuseppe Arconati Visconti. He made improvements to its gardens and the loggia.
By early 20th Century the buildings had fallen into a state of neglect when an American military offficer, Butler Ames, purchased and renovated the villa and its gardens.
In 1974 it was bought by the explorer Guido Monzino who filled it with rich collections, including artifacts acquired on his expeditions.
Monzino left the villa to FAI, Fondo Ambiente Italiano, the National Italian Trust.
