Villa Erba, historical background

Renowned for being the home of Luchino Visconti, the famous Italian film director, Villa Erba was designed at the end of the 19th Century, with a Mannerist inspiration, which gives a dramatic impression of opulence.
1816 - The property is purchased by the Peluso family, already owner of Villa d’Este, and is turned into an aristocratic residence.
1898-1901 - Villa Erba, status symbol of the family's wealth, is completed and is dedicated to Luigi's beloved wife, Anna Brivio. The Erbas often host artists, distinguished guests and celebrities from the political and industrial world.
1920 - On her parents’ death, Carla Erba, who got married to the Duke Visconti, inherits the property. She spends her summer months there together with her seven sons, one of whom is Luchino Visconti. The social life at the Villa is always vibrant with receptions and cultural events.
1972 - Luchino Visconti, at the peak of his career and struck by an illness, retreats in convalescence to Villa Erba and finishes the editing of Ludwig.
1986 - The Visconti heirs sell the Villa and most of the estate to a public consortium, aimed at building the Exhibition and Congress Centre.
